[edit] General Discussion

I just thought I would put a spot in here for general discussion. I've also added a couple specific ones below. Much thanks to Andrew for setting the place up! DukeEgr93 16:39, 16 July 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Style Guide

We've started a Style Guide to collect thoughts about how to present the information in Duiki. Please take a moment to check it out and make any additions, deletions, or corrections you think will make this a better place. DukeEgr93 20:53, 18 July 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Templates

I was thinking that using templates might be helpful on these pages. I have already made one for restaurants at Template:Restaurant and am working on one for people. Any thoughts about other templates? DukeEgr93 16:39, 16 July 2006 (MDT)

  • Should there be templates created for sports teams and sports facilities? I was also thinking there should be a similar outline for each team as well (something like current schedule, coaches, current team members, history, links). Is there a good site on how to make templates? They don't seem that hard, but a reference would be nice. --JMullen 17:22, 28 August 2006 (MDT)
    • My only worry about that kind of team page is that we can probably just put an external link to the relevant [http:www.goduke.com Go Duke] page. I think the pages should exist, and that a template for what we do want on here would be good (maybe focus on head coach and team captains, location, offices?) and have an external link section.

I learned how to make templates by looking at other templates so I am not sure of a guide. The "parsing" templates are a bit harder with all those "if" statements hanging around, but you can probably just copy the whole of Template:Building and repurpose it.
      DukeEgr93  T / C   19:11, 28 August 2006 (MDT)
      • Yes, it would be a waste of time to duplicate the info on GoDuke.com, but, I think we should have pages for the facilities just like we do for academic buildings. It might work just to have more "static" info on the team pages, such as team history, coaches, Duke Hall of fame members, record against UNC, and captains like you suggested.

Thanks for the template link. --JMullen 19:36, 28 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Images

Pictures, when uploaded, need to have some kind of reference as to whether there are copyrights or not. For example, the logo for Tyler's Taproom, is used only under fair use as that page is a review and information about the restaurant itself. For things like that, just include the Template:logo template in the description of the file. More licensing options will be made available, and generally will follow the Wikipedia model. [edit] Neutral Viewpoint?

Though we attempt to ascribe to a neutral viewpoint, I believe that we should allowed designate sections of articles, or entire articles, to be reviews, slanted, or biased. This is what will most likely differentiate us from Dukepass, and mark us as a true "community" website. (For example, instead of just a page for K-Ville, we need to be able to link to a page called "Stories from K-Ville" which lend insight into what it's actually like to tent. These sorts of features cannot be offered by traditional outlets, and are therefore our key niche.)

  • Agreed - the opinions are definitely key here. And I promise to keep reminding myself "Duiki ~= Wikipedia; Duiki > Wikipedia" DukeEgr93 16:18, 18 July 2006 (MDT)

[edit] To Do List

Here's a spot to add pages you would like to see and are planning to work on if you have time but are more than willing to let other people work on. Just put the prospective title in double square brackets. If you actually make a page, be sure to remove it from the list.

If you have Google Earth, you can look up the Geo coordinates of buildings and places on campus. If you post coordinates and their buildings to my talk page, I can make make it so that you can click "map it" on a building's page and it will center on it on the campus map. --DuikiSysop 18:34, 22 July 2006 (MDT)

You can also look at the Special:Wantedpages section to see the pages that people have linked in other articles, but that do not exist. If you decide to take on one of these pages, please see if the linked name is the best name for that page; if not, be bold and change it in the linked pages.

[edit] Pages on Departments

I'm a little worried about posting the major and minor requirements on here because (a) they change often and (b) they are different for each matriculating class. Maybe instead list a link that goes to the major or minor requirements section of a particular department? Thoughts? DukeEgr93 22:05, 4 August 2006 (MDT)

  • Hmm...I see what you mean. However, once the initial page for each major is set up, its something that needs maintenence only once a year at the worst. These events would be fairly public I imagine, likely appearing at least in the Chronicle. I trust a member of this community would take the liberty of updating (even if that member is myself). One concern I do have, however, is the large amount of space the section takes up in the information box. I'm wary about linking to department pages, as many of these things are hidden in the middle of long pages which would require scrolling through or PDF files, for which it is not possible to link to a specific section. This degrades the instant access which we are trying to foster here I think. My suggestion is to embed the major/minor requirements in a box which must be opened, much like the contents box on some articles which can be closed. After studying the code here, I will try to implement that tomorrow. Smartissexy 2:01, 5 August 2006 (EST)
    • Still, the main concern I have is that degree requirements change for each matriculating year, so somehow the requirements would need to be tagged as "Requirements for Entering Class of 2006" (for this year's incoming freshmen) - that might get to be pretty complicated. Not sure how active other departments are, but I know some of the engineering departments now have up to three different requirement sets depending on matriculation date (and more if people are taking 5+ years to graduate, since they are allowed to complete the requirements from their matriculation year). - DukeEgr93 15:01, 5 August 2006 (MDT)
      • Yes, I see the problem (having looked at the engineering websites). Hmmm...maybe we can persuade certain deparments (cough...math...cough) to make this data more directly linkable. I'll keep thinking about it. Smartissexy 17:40, 5 August 2006 (EST)

[edit] Course Pages

What sort of information should go on specific course pages? Also, what structure should be set for them? I'm thinking we should establish something for them - maybe even their own namespace of "Courses:COURSE" such as, in my case, Courses:EGR53. The downside being references would have to be [[Courses:EGR53|EGR53]] to get just EGR53 to show up instead of the name space Courses:EGR53. Not sure how much semester-to-semester info should go there, though, for fear of built-it obsolecense.
DukeEgr93  T / C   10:41, 6 August 2006 (MDT)
  • I just set up a course page for Religion 48, which now appears also in the portal for Academics. I created the infobox for it as well, which can easily be modified, but I believe contains enough pertinent information. As for semester-to-semester info, I think it should be kept to a minimum, that's what actual course webpages are for, obviously, these should be linked to. I think the course pages should have the infobox, a basic synopsis, and a section for reviews. As for organization, I think it would be best to stick with something like Religion 48, or Engineering 53, and have a page entitled Courses which would list all currently existing course pages. (this should be created momentarily by myself). Smartissexy 10:58, 6 August 2006 (MDT)
    • Actually, you shouldn't have to worry about a Courses page, since the category Category:Courses will automatically take care of that. I also agree with the naming scheme (i.e. no Course namespace). One small thing though - some of those names will get REALLY LONG; should we use the ACES-standard abbreviations for course names (i.e. EGR 53 versus Engineering 53)?
      DukeEgr93  T / C   11:20, 6 August 2006 (MDT)
      • Yeah, i think that would get obnoxious. I'm for moving to the ACES abbreviations, but I'll create a page which lists them for reference as well. Some of them are strange, like MGRECON. Smartissexy 06:22, 7 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Vandalism

  • Just had our first vandal: User:Willy On Wheels - I blocked the user for a week and reverted the edits and redirects. Sigh.
DukeEgr93  T / C   23:43, 6 August 2006 (MDT)
  • A second vandal- User:Duke, I'm trying to revert pages, though he created a few so I guess I will just delete the content and make them stubs. Blocked for a week until further action is discussed. If anyone can help clean up, check Special:Contributions/Duke for a list of sites that need to be cleaned up/censored. --JustinMullen[Talk] 07:00, 12 September 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Welcoming Committee

I just put together a template and a category for a kind of Welcoming Committee - I appreciated the welcome I received on another wiki so figured I would through it on here. Thoughts? Volunteers? More info once the user creation log is set (i.e. once Duiki will generate a nice list of new folks for us to welcome!)
DukeEgr93  T / C   23:33, 7 August 2006 (MDT)
  • As of 8/11/2006, all new non-sysop users have received welcomes! Also, the new user creation log is available at Special:Logs/Newusers
    DukeEgr93  T / C   19:53, 11 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Awards

I boldy went where Wikipedia's gone before and came up with a couple awards for posting on user pages. See Template:DA:GoldStar, Template:DA:SilverStar, and Template:DA:BronzeStar for details. If anyone has other ideas and wants help creating a graphic, please let me know.

[edit] Software on Main Page?

I was thinking that there should be a link added to the [Software Category Listings] on the Main Page under "Computer and Internet." I would add it myself, but the page appears to be locked or un-editable. Could an admin do this? I was thinking it would encourage more people to write up software they use at or for school, making Duiki the first place people look for tech support.

(For some reason typing "[ [Category:Software]]" on this page does not create a link)

--JMullen 17:10, 28 August 2006 (MDT)

  • Great idea - I'll add the link. Also, to add a link to a category (versus the category itself), you type [[:Category:Software]]. Thusly: Category:Software or to give it a different link text, Software Category.
    DukeEgr93  T / C   17:16, 28 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Athletics Portal

Do you think that the Athletics portal should be changed so that it is similar to the other portals (Academics, Campus, Life, etc.)? Right now it just lists the teams and facilities, but you could just highlight one team, one facility, one coach, and one athlete, then provide links to Category:Athletic Facilities and Category:Varsity Sports. The downside is the portal does not have direct links to all the sports teams. But isn't that more what a category page is really for? --JMullen 17:38, 28 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] A few things I thought about

  • So, the site is becoming more popular, more members are registering, yet our contributing base is still rather low. Should we make the "Duiki needs your help" on the front page more visible? I was thinking we should push something like "Make your contribution" or "See something wrong? Click edit!"-- just something to push the fact that we need people to edit, make pages, fill in holes, and the like. We could make another flyer that shows Duiki depends on the student body's collective knowledge.
  • While we get more members, would it be worthwhile to establish a traditional "Village Pump", like there is on Wikipedia? As discussion increases on the Commuity portal, it could get pretty cluttered. I have seen references to a Village Pump, but there is no outline or organization. We could move general discussion and questions to the Village Pump and reserve the Community Portal page for Admin announcements and listing most needed pages, most used templates, etc.
  • We could make multiple 8.5x11 pdf poster/flyers, then work ePrint magic and post them like crazy arround campus.
  • Maps: I have no idea, logistically, how map integration works here. But, I thought that if possible, we could integrate with Duke Maps instead of, or in addition to Google Maps. Duke Maps already has a bunch of info on the buildings, and is a better campus map than Google Maps, even with the satelite imaging. Then again, I don't even know if we could get an API for Duke Maps... Just a thought.

--JMullen 19:01, 30 August 2006 (MDT)

  • All of these are valid concerns. The Village Pump now exists (to a certain extent) and now awaits a vibrant community of editors to fill it with bureaucracy. As for the other suggestions, I will take care of them on Friday when I have a moment to do so. --AndrewTutt 00:01, 31 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Community Calendar?

The community calendar problem has been solved. --AndrewTutt 01:12, 3 September 2006 (MDT)

[edit] 200 Articles!

Well, we broke the 200 mark tonight due to Andrew's massive assault on Student Groups tonight (along with buses and the 'dillo). Keep it up guys. How long will it take to reach quadruple digits? --JustinMullen[Talk] 22:58, 8 September 2006 (MDT)
