[edit] Q: How do you add pictures?

Adding a picture is a 2 step process.

[edit] Step 1: Upload the Image

To upload an image, go to the toolbox on the left navbar, and click upload. Then, find the image file on your computer by clicking browse. Add a description, preferably indicating the source of the image, and then click upload.

[edit] Step 2: Add the image to an appropriate page

Navigate to the page where you would like the image placed, then click edit under the editing tools. To add the image, use the following syntax:

[[Image:imagename.jpg|thumb|left|200px|This is the caption]]
  • Thumb: Puts a pretty border around the image and allows text to flow around it.
  • Alignment: this can be left or right (above the image is aligned left)
  • Size: this can be any value, generally 300px or fewer.
  • Caption: Simply type the caption text last.

Any of the options can be omitted. The minimum you must do to place an image is:

Hope this helps!

[edit] Naming and Referencing

You should make sure the filename makes sense (TreeOutsideHudson.jpg versus D0121452354.jpg). Also, please enter some information in the summary that describes the picture.

If the picture is commercial, and does not belong to you, you should not load it unless you are loading it to be used on a page that will critique the company to whom the image belongs. In that case, you should also put the code {{logo}} in the description so that the following appears in the image's page:

Copyrighted

This is a logo of an organization, item, or event, and is protected by copyright and/or trademark. It is believed that the use of low-resolution images of logos to illustrate the organization, item, or event in question qualifies as fair use under United States copyright law. Any other uses of this image may be copyright infringement. Certain commercial use of this image may also be trademark infringement.

Use of the logo here does not imply endorsement of the organization by Duiki.

To the uploader: please add a detailed fair use rationale for each use as well as the source of the work and copyright information.

The above text is modified from that found at Wikipedia's Logo Template

Also, if you are using a picture taken from Wikipedia you should add the following code:

{{WikipediaPicture|date=THEDATE|page=THEPAGE|tag=THETAG}}

where you replace THEDATE with...the date, THEPAGE with the name of the image on WP: Wikipedia and THETAG with the tag Wikipedia used to describe the file (i.e. public domain, logo, etc.). Note that the page and tag items are optional, but appreciated. You can just use:

{{WikipediaPicture|date=THEDATE}}

As an example, the picture of Benjamin Newton Duke called BNDuke.jpg came from Wikipedia. The summary included the code:

(({{WikipediaPicture|date=8/19/2006|tag=public domain|page=BNDuke.jpg}})

which you can see by going to the image's page, Image:BNDuke.jpg

To add a picture to a page, simply include the code [[Image:NAME]] where you want the image to be. If you'd like to go fancier - such as chaning the size or putting the picture in a box, take a look at the Duke University page for how it is done there.

[edit] Q: What are the conventions for linking and naming?

[edit] Q: Is there a way to see a list of all the pages in the wiki?

Check out Special:Allpages to see every page on the Duke Wiki.

[edit] Q: Can I see which pages link to a particular page?

Check out Special:Whatlinkshere&target=FAQ

  • Note: You must be on a page to click on this. It is located in the Toolbox.

[edit] Q: Where can I find out geeky things about this site?

[edit] Q: How do I rename a page?

  • Only Duke Wiki Administrators can actually rename pages; leave a note on a talk page if there's a page you think needs to be renamed. Alternately, if you have just started the page, you can copy all the contents to a new page and just let an administrator know to delete the old one. Once a page has some "history," however, it is much better to move it than duplicate it.

[edit] Q: How do I add a page to a category?

To add a page to a category, use [[Category:Desired Category Designation Desired Name on Category Page if Not the Page Name (useful for listing by last name when the article starts with the person's first name)]]
