Mi Gente is Duke's Latino Student's Association. Mi Gente is a student group that conducts cultural, academic, political, social and service events, which engage Latino/Hispanic culture and issues. Mi Gente aims to serve not only Latino students and residents, but more broadly the Duke and Durham communities. Mi Gente welcome individuals of all backgrounds and persuasions to participate in our events. While non-partisan, we aim to lend our perspective when relevant to broader questions engaging the Duke community.
Mi Gente conducts a broad range of events throughout the academic year in order to engage a diverse population. Our activities include roundtable discussions, dinners, speakers, parties, and in the spring, our Mezcla Cultural Extravaganza—a platform for student performances.

[edit] Events
Mi Gente aims to represent and serve overlapping, diverse, and heterogeneous populations. Duke's 7% Latino population reflects Hispanic diversity in the United States, including students not only from predominant Latino regions (Florida and the Southwest, for example) but also from throughout the country. We also reach out to Duke students beyond those who identify as Latino or Hispanic. We make a point out of making our events accessible to a broad population beyond both the Duke and Latino communities.
Some of our events included a forum for students interested in financial sector careers, a celebration of Mexico's Dia de los Muertos , and several themed parties which raised thousands of dollars for local charities. We have also partnered with the university's Latino Studies Initiative to bring guest speakers on topics ranging from pop music to international law's impact on the death penalty. Every Year Mi Gente hosts "Latinos Unidos Gala," a dinner program bringing together students from the Duke, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina State University.
Mi Gente holds General Body Meetings (GBM) approximately every three weeks. These events are open to everyone. You can always count on these events for discussion, good times - and free food from local Latin restaurants. Stay tuned to the Mi Gente website and to LatinoLink for information on event dates and times.
[edit] Latino Link
LatinoLink is the easiest way to stay up-to-date with Mi Gente events, news, and announcements. LatinoLINK is Mi Gente's biweekly newsletter sent from the secretary to our members.
