Bostock Library (pronounced baw-stock) is the 2005 addition to the Perkins Library on Duke's West Campus.

In 2006, the pronounciation bow-stock came into colloquial use by a majority of students, prompting a major campaign to teach students the correct pronounciation, with an attached $500 cash prize.

The Library became the temporary home to the Circulation staff and library services during the renovation of Perkins Library. Learn more about Bostock Library...

Landmarks

East Campus Bridge

The East Campus Bridge is a free-speech zone on campus, where any student may express his or her views, no matter how outrageous, provided he or she has the paint to do it.

Starting in 2006, students will temporarily have to find another place to advertise.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation plans to rebuild the bridge, which will soon begin to deteriorate. The rebuilding project, which will span 1 to 2 years, also allow emergency vehicles to pass under Main Street on Campus Drive. Due to its age, DOT officials aren't sure how it was constructed or what it might cost to restore or renovate, so it is more cost-efficient to replace it. Learn more about the East Campus Bridge...

Diya's annual fall cultural show Awaaz is its most famous signature event and the largest student-run event on campus, with over two hundred performers and over two thousand attendees. The show is planned, arranged and executed entirely by Duke students of a wide range of backgrounds and cultures.

Due to its campus-wide appeal, the SOFC grants broad funding for the promotion and execution of Diya, and therefore tickets are free and the event must be able to accomodate the entire student body. The event is also largely supported by the Multicultural Fund. Learn more about Awaaz...

Giles

Giles, also known as G-Unit and "the G-Spot", is a dormitory in the East 2 Neighborhood. It is located on the Main Quad of East Campus, and arguably has the best location, being in close vicinity to Lilly Library, the Marketplace, the East Campus Bus Stop, and Brodie Gym. It was named for the first three female graduates of Trinity College, Theresa, Mary, and Persis Giles.

Each room in Giles comes with two of the following: desk, desk chair, bed with half loft, three-drawer bureau, bookshelf, and cabinet. A popular setup in the 05-06 year was placing the bookshelf on top of the desk, but much variation was seen. Having the half lofts meant that full lofts could not be used in the dorm, but all of the other articles in the room could easily fit under the half loft, thus increasing the space available in the room. The half lofts could also be stacked to form bunk beds. Learn more about Giles Dorm...
