[edit] Parser Functions
LOL - apparently the ones you have don't need the pound symbol before them. Very good then - lemme go try those out! DukeEgr93 16:29, 17 July 2006 (MDT)
[edit] Wikipedia Commons Template
For the parser functions, you have to have the pipe at the end of the variable in the if statement. I just put it in there, and I'm pretty sure it is working the way you want. DukeEgr93 08:37, 20 July 2006 (MDT)
[edit] Templates
There's something a little amiss with the Building template - I think the nested ifs are a bit off in that if you specify the border color, you can't get a byline. Something like that... I'll take a look after I get some restaurants done. DukeEgr93 12:41, 22 July 2006 (MDT)
[edit] A Rose By Any Other Name
Got your message about names. I think people should have to log in to edit - this site will be a prime target for vandali == sm once it gets going, and having logins and accounts is one way to combat that (it makes it harder to make edits, and makes it easier to track and block vandals). As for names - I'd probably let people pick their own screen names but would make a policy recommendation that people put something about themselves on their own page. I wouldn't require it, though. That's my $0.02 anyway. DukeEgr93 12:54, 26 July 2006 (MDT)
[edit] John Hope Franklin
Two quick things:
- Did you want to have quite that much Wikipedia content for Dr. Franklin?
- The image that was one there...wasn't Dr. Franklin at the 2006 commencement, so I added one that is and changed the caption.
[edit] Congrats
Congratulations, you've got 100 articles on this site! Good progress, I'd say. Here's to the next 100.--Bfa72587 19:54, 4 August 2006 (MDT)
[edit] How Cool is That
This place has caught on in a pretty cool way, gotta say. Congrats on that - here's to an academic year of providing all kinds of good info for folks. DukeEgr93 T / C 20:25, 8 August 2006 (MDT)[edit] Imports
Did all those imports come from Wikipedia? If so, I'll go through and put GFDL notices on them and strip out the links that won't find their way onto here. DukeEgr93 T / C 10:09, 11 August 2006 (MDT)[edit] Nowiki tags
- For the templates - we may want to start adding the nowiki tag info to explain what all the optional tags are for the parser-function-illiterate... DukeEgr93 T / C 20:14, 14 August 2006 (MDT)
- We should make a template that explains how that stuff works, one that we can then put on each of them. --DuikiSysop 20:18, 14 August 2006 (MDT)
[edit] Award
| Duiki Gold Star Award | |
| You've done an amazing amount of work getting this thing started, running, populated, formatted, extended, advertised, paid for, hosted, used, and beyond all that useful. Thanks for all the effort you have put into this enterprise! DukeEgr93 T / C 19:50, 22 August 2006 (MDT) |
[edit] Safari Problems
So, apparently people with Safari are having huge formatting issues - do you think there is a way to fix it, or maybe there just just be a note on the front saying "Apple users are advised to use Firefox in order to view Duiki properly. Viva la Free Software"? DukeEgr93 T / C 12:29, 30 August 2006 (MDT)- Ouch-- yeah, I just checked to see, and its pretty bad/unusable in Safari. Its like the article space extends 100% of the window so the menu overlaps atleast a third of the article (all the links that are part of the article in that area are unaccessable). Unless you want to redo the Style sheet (which I would think is most likely the problem), I would reccommend Firefox. I think it is pretty superior to Safari at this point. I was going to check to see if any of the alternative themes worked better for safari, but I was unable to log-in to change my preferences for that because the Username and Password fields were covered by the menu, making them unaccessable.
Nice job fixing the logo/header colors! --JMullen 14:20, 2 September 2006 (MDT)
[edit] Sig
oooo - somebody just got a new sig. But orange and gray? On a Duke site? :-D DukeEgr93 T / C 20:59, 2 September 2006 (MDT)[edit] Nice Calendar
It is a rather good solution... Unless anyone has extra time to do some serious coding. Do you know any programs that export .ical formats besides Apple's iCal and Google Calendar? -JustinMullen[Talk] 21:43, 4 September 2006 (MDT)
[edit] Vandalism
I didn't know if you checked recent changes or the village pump today, but I saw a bunch of vandalism from User:Duke this morning. I blocked him for a week, and All of the explitories (is that a word) have been edited out or reverted. He created a number of pages so I put about a one sentence statement to replace the vandalism and filed them under stubs. See the pump for more info. --JustinMullen[Talk] 21:35, 12 September 2006 (MDT)
- To block someone you just click "block" in UserName (Talk | contribs | block) that is listed by each edit under recent changes. But, I'm not sure where to go from there. Dr. G might know. He block the first vandal we had. --JustinMullen[Talk] 22:19, 12 September 2006 (MDT)
[edit] Restaurant Ratings
Do you want have a new page for ratings for each restaurant, or just have the ratings as a part of the restaurant page? Just seems like having an independent page for ratings might be a bit much... DukeEgr93 T / C 11:26, 16 September 2006 (MDT)[edit] possible vandalism
Hey, check the sandbox edits by User:PeterS that recently happened. I mean he wrote some stuff, then deleted it himself, so I dunno what you would do. I haven't taken any action-- just letting you know. -JustinMullen[Talk] 21:56, 24 September 2006 (MDT)
[edit] copycat
I didn't know if you had seen it, but there another 'Duke Wiki' just started: http://duke.collegewikis.com
[edit] Bus Stopped?
Wha' happened to da bus? DukeEgr93 T / C 18:52, 28 April 2007 (MDT)[edit] WikiNode
Please create a WikiNode for your wiki. See http://www.umasswiki.com/wiki/WikiNode for an example, and links to why this is a good idea.
Also, congrats on having a great wiki for Duke. --GMorehou (talk | UMassWiki) 16:42, 17 July 2007 (MDT)
[edit] Back on the Bus
So...I finally read and understood your note about monobook and all that jazz. Happy to report - I'm back on the bus. Woohoo! Meantime, I am starting to move the EGR 53 FAQ stuff over to Quanda and will complete it when quanda.pratt.duke.edu exists as an IP.
I wonder if I can make a case for mediawikilanguage being related closely enough to a "computational method" as to get EGR53 folks to write Duiki source for an assignment... Hmmmmm..... DukeEgr93 T / C 07:54, 20 August 2007 (MDT)[edit] Wurdz
Thanks for the spelling fix - I just put FireFox 2 on the Mac at the office should I should be a little better... Odd that there isn't a spell check on most wikis (or is there and I've just missed it all this time?) DukeEgr93 T / C 22:01, 23 August 2007 (MDT)[edit] Transclusion Issues
I think the pages that are failing to transclude properly are just too big... I look at the page source and the transcluded material cuts out, followed by a warning about pre and post expansion size:
<!--The number 65535 always scares me... DukeEgr93 T / C 23:27, 23 August 2007 (MDT)
Pre-expand include size: 65535 bytes
Post-expand include size: 65535 bytes

[edit] OtherWiki
Dashboard (wiki.duke.edu) is...less than useful seeming for general consumption. It also doesn't *seem* to allow individuals to request space, only groups and departments. Annnnnnd you have to assign individual permissions. Woohoo!
[student.groups.duke.edu] on the other hand, certainly has potential. Though I can't figure out how to log in except for that itty bitty gray word at the footer. Once I logged in, the front page was MUCH more manageable (the nav info apparently is not a part of non-logged in folks; which is fine). How'd you get them to run MediaWiki? Or is it pointing to elsewhere? DukeEgr93 T / C 17:01, 29 August 2007 (MDT)[edit] Tech Stuff
Hola - I finally managed to kick myself into a slightly less-low gear technologically and have started hosting a site - specifically, dukeegr93.com. I'm going to start editing the tech docs there - Pratt stuff that is a little narrower than Duiki's broader focus. Also - I hope to have it hosted on a pratt server at some point but they've been a while in getting php 5.0...
In the meantime - any projects here I can help with? I mostly going to be getting ready for classes (as fate has it, I am teaching BME 153L in the Spring) but am hoping to do some more Duke Development and Duiki is a great part of that. DukeEgr93 T / C 17:51, 19 June 2008 (MDT)
