[edit] Parser Functions

Hmm, I installed parser functions I thought.

For instance if I add 5 and 2

5 + 2 = 7

Tell me if I need to install a different set of extensions. Maybe I got the wrong ones. (unsigned by DuikiSysop)

  • Just adding a comment on this - the parser functions now need the pound, so the above is
    5 + 2 = {{#expr: 5 + 2}}

[edit] The #if Template work-around

It seems 2 different bugs combine to stymie the usage of #if in 1.6

One of them is in the PHP code, and I was able to fix it more or less. #If will definitely work now if used.

However, the problem was also with the template itself. For some reason, if it is embedded in the selection table (just my word for the dynamic table created for each article, I don't know the real name), the Parser fails to be invoked, and so none of the ParserFunctions are invoked, including #if. To solve this, you have to tack on an empty #if at the end of the table (at least, that was the first thing I tried that worked, so I stopped looking for a more elegant solution.)

Also, all parser functions are from now on invoked with a #prefix.

[edit] Commons Image Template

Dr. G -

I need your help with the Wikipedia Commons attribution template. I can't figure out the #if parsing.

Thnx.

[edit] Infoboxes, etc.

I probably should have mentioned that I adopted the infobox and a few other CSS templates from Wikipedia.

[edit] Name-Linked Accounts

Dr. G -

I have been wondering should I...

A. Unlock editing so anyone may edit without logging in
B. Change the policy so that everyone should use their real name as their account alias
C. Leave things as they are?

Love to hear your advice.

[edit] J. Franklin, etc.

Yeah, I have been getting a little desperate for content, especially regarding people already on campus.

The problem (which, might be an advantage for us) is that it is hard to find information about various things at Duke (except in bits and pieces in various places).

Both Paul Farmer and John Hope Franklin are highly borrowed from Wikipedia. I try to cut the parts that are not Duke-related from the articles, but they do give me an opportunity to see what "full" articles might look like - and what we might do to categorize them, what they might all share, etc.

We could probably roll them both back though. I would understand the rationale.

[edit] Department Pages

I have responded to your inquiry in the community portal. Smartissexy

[edit] Administrivia

Yes, lets do that from now on. Smartissexy 10:45, 6 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Interwiki Links

Interwiki links now work.

[[WP:Main Page]]

Now becomes WP:Main Page.

[edit] Swimming

The Taishoff Aquatic Pavillion on West is much more social. Speaking of which, it needs a page... JMullen

[edit] Imports from Wikipedia

Yeah, I just went through and kind of got carried away. All are Wikipedia imports. Now they need to be gone-through, and images need to be imported, and the GFDL notice needs to be added, and the links need fixin'.

[edit] New User Logging has been temporarily disabled

I am working to find out why, but for some reason the new extension malforms the XML output of all of our feeds.

I am trying to get to the bottom of the situation, for at this moment, for the life I of me I cannot figure out what is wrong.

Anyway, I hope to have it fixed in 1-2 days so we can continue to have new users tracked but also get good XML feeds to our sitemaps accounts with search engines and for the Main Page

--DuikiSysop 04:10, 13 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] The Problem

It seems that the two include files had trailing returns (an extra two lines following the ?> tag -> While I have no idea why it would do so, the extra lines malformed the site XML feeds. So while I spent hours trying to find a problem with the code, the problem actually resided within the files themselves. On any account, we now have the New User Logging back for good. --DuikiSysop 15:04, 14 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Hey

Yeah, I thought I would go head and add that for all the Mac people out there. I had some free time after moving in, and figuring out that X11 wasn't preloaded wasted a bunch of my time last year.

Hopefully this Wiki thing will catch on more since school has started. It has loads of potential.

[edit] Athletic Templates

I just replied to your response. I think we should have pages for the teams, but just have static information (i.e. history) and leave all the current events up to goduke.com --JMullen 19:41, 28 August 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Safari

I would fix the site for Safari, but I do not have a copy of the browser. Knowing Safari as I do though, the problem is likely not going to be fixed. What could be advised would be for Safari users to use a different skin (one of the other skins in the database under their user profile) which should work with Safari (I think).

But, yeah, let's put a notice up that says "No Safari" for now...

[edit] Signatures

Umm, yeah but grey/orange fit the site-wide color scheme nicely. Jealous much? --AndrewTutt 23:44, 2 September 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Latex

  • Dr. G, you are one funny guy. But, you forgot to add that it is commonly used in surgical gloves, swim caps, and (of course) condoms. -JustinMullen[Talk] 21:53, 5 September 2006 (MDT)

[edit] RE: Matt Lynch

Yes, the new record board is named after him. They had a ceremony of sorts during Alumni weekend last year to unveil it. I will add a section on it tomorrow. --JustinMullen[Talk] 00:44, 15 September 2006 (MDT)

[edit] RE: Restaurant Ratings

Yeah. I will change it so that it allows you to edit the "ratings" portion of the same page instead. --AndrewTutt 13:04, 16 September 2006 (MDT)

[edit] RE: new 'vandalism'

yeah, I didn't take any action. I wasn't trying to be a stickler or anything-- just reporting it. --JustinMullen[Talk] 21:49, 26 September 2006 (MDT)

[edit] Re: Bus Stopped

Dr G. -

I was going through trying to fix a few problems that had arisen a long time ago in the porting of Duiki to mediawiki 1.9.x and halfway succeeded. One change I finally made was moving the old skin to a different name than the original monobook. To get back to the old skin tho, you have to go change it to monobook 2 in the preferences. I am thinking I will be doing a ton of work this summer to make Duiki better, including re-skinning the site so it more accurately reflects what we want out of it. In the meantime, I hope that was what you meant. The old pages used a really really old bad logo from the first couple days of the site.

- Andrew

P.S. - My tinkering happened to accidently introduce a whole new set of problems with the skins. I need to rip them all out I think and go back to a much earlier version.

[edit] Wurdz

Yeah, there is no built-in spell check as yet. I am sure one will come out in a later edition. --AndrewTutt 22:06, 23 August 2007 (MDT)

[edit] Student.groups.duke.edu

Have you seen it? It's totally institutional - in case you ever wanted to move your engineering pages somewhere more "official" (in addition to Quanda)...

Also, have you seen wiki.duke.edu? If they ever make that useful, it could be really useful. --AndrewTutt 13:53, 29 August 2007 (MDT)

[edit] Re:Student.groups.duke.edu

That project is on Duke's servers and is on the duke domain, so it is 100% institutional as far as I have been told. The site is meant to not be easily recognized to be a wiki, but instead act as a place where student groups can make webpages for their groups quickly and easily (and not by coincidence, so DSG, the Union, and Campus Council can all share the same look and feel and can cross-link with each other. The skin I developed for it has actually become relatively popular already. Two people have emailed me asking for the files which will allow them to make their own derivatives. Anyway, I am not sure why they want to be so stringed with the wiki.duke.edu site - they actually want my opinion/advice on how to make it better, but telling them to lighten permissions would be the last thing they want to hear, because that's why they bought it in the first place. --AndrewTutt 17:26, 29 August 2007 (MDT)

[edit] Re: Duiki Dev

Dr. G - You know, I never have had much direction for this site. Every year we try to get more people involved, and it has grown slowly, but honestly, I just keep adding what I think is interesting (and what I hear freshman saying they need). We have become the #1 source of information for incoming freshman regarding Dorms at Duke, and I am proud of that, so we are definitely useful for one thing. But as for other fronts, so far we have not had a ton of success. I will be in Uganda until the 18th, but if you have any brilliant ideas, I will be ready to work on them with you when I get back. --AndrewTutt 20:17, 20 June 2008 (MDT)

[edit] Re: Campus Nicknames

I have also begun a similar page to the campus nicknames page that I term the glossary. Should they be merged?

[edit] RE: Losing Duiki

I too was sad to see it go. Duiki was the original identity but it was largely a nod to the fact that dukewiki.com was taken when the site started. What makes me sad is that duiki was the flagship that had all the links and the reputation built up. Now we are back to square one... it's like the site is out in the boonies once more.

Any tips you have for how I can edit when I am not at duke but I am bored at work would be much appreciated.

Maybe we could do something to get the word out about this site? I feel like it could be so much more than it is right now, but I just do not know what to do but let it wait and one day be discovered (I was sure it would take off long ago... yeah right)
